Many of us are up to our skulls with hard work and dealing with stressful situations.
Thankfully, music has the power to help ease you into a state of total relaxation and serenity. With this top ten list, I want to recommend you ten songs that I think will bring your stress levels right down! Here’s my top ten songs for unwinding!
10. White Hex – Only A Game
Kicking off this list is a song from a duo I have recently discovered, White Hex. They have this wonderful electronic, eighties-inspired sound that can adapt to do all sorts of services as music. This song, in particular, isn’t the calmest song ever released, but it has something about it that can make being curled up on your bed feel a little more fun.
9. The Acid – Veda
Before listening to this song, make sure you’re in a dark room and listening with good quality earphones. Now, get ready for a an audio experience! The texture of this song is utterly paralysing! Relaxation is not a choice with this song, it will happen. The first half has a sense of formlessness and it then becomes a rhythmic sensual extravaganza!
8. Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga – Anything Goes
The music industry’s cutest new couple, jazz legend Tony Bennett and music/fashion icon Lady Gaga have made a jazz album together and this is the first track from it! The unusual pairing between these two works wonderfully. It’s cool and something I have recently loved listening to in my bedroom for that little touch of sophistication and relaxation.
7. Daithí featuring Raye – Chameleon Life
Much like the title of the song, this song adapts to your mood. You can listen to this song for whatever reason but it is especially great for setting up an evening of chilling out. It has subtle house influences that keep the beat soft and cool. There are gentle synths and the chorus balances energy and softness wonderfully.
6. Glass Animals – Gooey
Layered harmonies and a soft beat are the main ingredients to a brilliant unwinding song and this song has both of those! The vocals are almost like a whisper and the music is structured very intelligently so it can still be a song you can relax to but still enjoy its upbeat values.
5. Hurts – The Water
This floaty ballad is by one of my favourite bands, Hurts. They are masters of moody and emotional musical illustrations and this is one I definitely enjoy relaxing to. The opening chords on piano have a sense of calm but there is a dark, unsafe sound to it. The orchestral instruments joining in the chorus eases you into place as the lyrics start provoking sensation involving water. This song makes me cry a lot but for some reason, it relaxes me. I’m weird like that.
4. Lana Del Rey – Bel Air
Welcome to peaceful, romantic paradise in audio format! This song will take you to heaven and make you enjoy the ride. My favourite experience with this song was listening to it by a pool in Portugal, staring up at the palm trees and listening to the children playing and jumping in and out of the water in the background. Listen to this song, and you’ll understand why that moment was so significant. This song heals!
3. Michael Jackson – Love Never Felt So Good (Original Demo)
As it says in the song title, I’m talking specifically about the original demo of the king’s latest release which is included on his posthumous album, XSCAPE. It’s just a piano and Michael’s sweet, honest voice. There is a breezy, jazz feel to the overall music of the song and Michael’s untouched recording just makes you feel like he’s singing to you. I play this song in the background sometimes and it just makes me smile.
2. OneRepublic – Au Revoir
I have talked about the fact that this song causes me to break down in tears far too often but it is just so beautiful! Another one of my favourite bands deliver this song with such acoustic brilliance that it still gives me chills like it’s my first time hearing it! The gorgeous orchestral instrumentation and Ryan Tedder’s stunning tonality using his voice… there simply is no better way to unwind! Well, my number 1 choice has something to say about that but for now, let this song wave “au revoir” to that stressful day you have just put up with!
1. Lana Del Rey – Yayo
I can see you rolling your eyes at me, “another Lana song, really?” Yes, really! This song is my number one choice because it has done so much for me in terms of how it helps me unwind. I used to have real trouble sleeping so I put this song (along with some other songs on this list) on a playlist which I would listen to in bed. Sure enough, I regained the ability to take control of my sleeping pattern! This song must have some strong effect on the brain’s chemical reactions because it can whisk you away to a totally different place where the muscles in your body just feel like marshmallows, or something like that. It has a pretty dark lyrical meaning but Lana’s soothing vocals and the timid piano sound just overpowers that entirely.
Well, there you have it! Just ten songs I recommend that will help you unwind after a long day of whatever it was that you were doing! Of course, these are just opinions and a small snippet of so many songs that I could suggest so please comment below and tell me what some of your favourite unwinding songs are!
