Sherlock to Return to the Small Screen for a Christmas Special…in 2015

I woke up to a text message this morning that read “SHERLOCK IS GETTING A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.” My half asleep mind could not comprehend this – it actually started to go crazy. Then I read the article and saw 2015 tagged on to it and felt immediate disappointment, but also relief; I don’t think I would have been mentally prepared for more Sherlock so close to when season three aired.

In an interview with Martin Freeman, he disclosed that a Christmas special is the most likely candidate for more Sherlock.

If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand.”

Does this mean we won’t get another full series? I guess it is hard to know so early in the game.

Freeman said it was “pretty likely” to begin filming early next year – but we know how busy both Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are so I, personally, am not keeping fingers crossed on both hands…just one.

On asked whether his wife (Amanda Abbington who plays Mary) was going to return he said, “Certainly, yes, for the foreseeable future.”

The rest of the quote contains a spoiler, so if you aren’t aware of the Conan Doyle stories and don’t want to find out I suggest you look away here.

Freeman continued, “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”

I certainly hope that day does not come on Christmas – Steven Moffat and the BBC already caused us pain last year with the end of Matt Smith as the Doctor.

Freeman is currently about to embark on some stage play as Richard III in a production by London’s Trafalgar Studios. This marks the first time he will play a professional Shakespearean role. The production will be opening next month.

So hold on to your deerstalkers, Sherlock fans. Christmas 2015 may be a long ways away…but at least it is not three years – there is always a silver lining.
