I would just like to preface this article by saying a few things about the following video…
Yes, I am an Australian.
Yes, this man is the democratically elected leader of my country.
No, it’s not some cleverly edited YouTube compilation.
Yes, he really said that… and that… and that… and that… and did that.
No, nothing contained within the video was taken out of context.
And NO!, the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott does not represent me, my opinions, thoughts or beliefs. I loathe this man and I honestly cannot fathom how anyone in my country could have possibly voted this man into power. However, last September Australia as a nation spoke and he was democratically elected our 28th Prime Minister.
And now, on to the article.
During last night’s episode of the HBO satirical news program Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, they aired a segment entitled “’Other Countries’ Presidents of the USA” in which they highlight the leaders of countries that aren’t the USA. Seems all just harmless fun, right? Wrong.
In what should be a hilarious four odd minute video package, it is in fact a sad yet accurate representation of the state of Australian politics.
When intro-ing the video, the voiceover describes Abbott as “hard line right wing Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who rose to power promising to be pro-business and religiously anti-immigration – literally religiously anti-immigration.” Words not just said for the laughs of the studio audience (of which there were many) but words that are in fact true, because as the video begins you will hear Abbott say, “Jesus knew there was a place for everything and it’s not necessarily everyone’s place to come to Australia.”
Yes, he really said that.
The video goes on to show Abbott’s true nature when discussing women “What housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing” and how he feels that the gay community (of which Abbott’s own sister belongs to) make him feel “a bit threatened”.
But why stop there? Why not insult an entire group of people and tell a racist joke about the Irish? Or when appearing on a radio show and are speaking live with an elderly woman who, as a way to make ends meet works as a phone sex operator, wink like a lewd pervert? Sure, why not do all of those things… yes, our democratically elected Prime Minister.
However nothing, and I mean nothing, could compare to his comments about a fallen Australian soldier, when he said “… well sometimes shit happens.” And again, yes he actually said that, and he said it to other Australian soldiers who were still serving at the time.
If you choose to watch the video, and I urge everyone to do so, I would like to apologise on behalf of myself and my entire country. I used to take a sort of pride in being an Australian, not just pride in my country, but a secret pride in the fact that we could just be here in our own little corner of the globe and no one never really paid us any attention. Now we’re the laughing stock of the world.
