Kristen Stewart has been dropped from the Snow White franchise. The actress was widely expected to return for Snow White and the Huntsman 2, but The Hollywood Reporter now says this will be a spinoff instead, simply titled The Huntsman.
Whether this is due to the huge media storm surrounding the alleged affair Stewart had with director Rupert Sanders is not for us to dwell on, but neither are involved with the new film in any way; Frank Darabont is now in talks to direct The Huntsman.
Darabont is an interesting choice as though he’s had previous successes with The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Majestic, he hasn’t stepped behind a camera on a feature film in seven years, when he directed The Mist (2007). Since then, he’s spent his time developing and then executive producing AMC’s zombie hit, The Walking Dead. He was attached to that project till 2011. With that kind of background, Darabont could produce an interestingly atmospheric tale, depending on the script he has to work with.
While Stewart and Sanders are out, other stars from the first film will be coming back for more. Chris Hemsworth will return to play the title role; with Charlize Theron playing the villain. The film is scheduled for release in 2016.
