Idris Elba certainly likes variety in his acting roles. From Captain Janek in Promethus, to playing Nelson Mandela on his long walk to freedom, now Elba has taken on a different role entirely, playing the leader of a child army in Beasts of No Nation.

Currently shooting in Ghana, the movie will be directed by Cary Fukunagas and is an adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s novel of the same name.

The movie follows a young boy named Agu who is forced to join an army in an African country after civil war tears his family apart. Elba will play the role Commandant, the leader of the group Agu joins.

Fukunagas also write the script and will produce alongside Elba. I’m pleased to see a film being made about such a sensitive issue, and I hope it will raise awareness of this dreadful plight which many young children are subjected to.

Elba will also be lending his voice to deadly tiger Shere Khan in Jon Faverau’s live action remake of The Jungle Book, which has also recently added Sir Ben Kinglsey to the cast to voice the black panther Bagheera. Lupita Nyong’o and Scarlett Johansonn will also lend their vocal talents to the Disney movie, which will be based on the great Rudyard Kipling novel of the same name.
