Be still, my fangirling heart. Disney has announced none other than Broadway musical star Kristen Chenoweth is to join the cast of its new original movie Descendants as the iconic evil villain Maleficent.

Production on the live-action adventure comedy is set to start in late May, with a release date of sometime in 2015. The movie will be directed by Kenny Ortega of High School Musical, and it follows the lives of various Disney Villain offspring.

Joining Glee favourite Chenoweth is a cast list which really looks promising. Dove Cameron- a Disney channel favourite and star of Liv and Maddie plays Mal, Maleficent’s teenage daughter alongside Cameron Boyce as Cruella DeVille’s son Carlos. Many will already recognise Boyce from his role as Luke in Disney Channel’s Jessie.

Newcomer Sofia Carson is cast as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, and Twilight’s Booboo Stewart takes on the role of Jafar’s son Jay. Another newcomer, Aussie, Mitchell Hope has been cast as Ben, the son of Belle and Beast.

I am so excited for the potential this film has. We already know of Kenny Ortega’s success with Disney Channel Original movies, and the cast list so far sounds superb. I really like the idea of Kristen Chenoweth as Maleficent, a role I am sure she will make her own.

Meanwhile, the film Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the evil fairy herself, opens on May 30 and also looks set to be enchantingly dark and wickedly enjoyable.
