Colour plays an extremely important role in Lois Lowry’s dystopian young adult novel, The Giver. It was not surprising then that when the first trailer for the film adaptation emerged in March that fans were up in arms. Not because of the cast or what was shown of the plot, but because the trailer was in colour.

Fans were placated to an extent a few weeks later when a special featurette was released where upon the black and white vs colour issue was addressed – and yes parts of the film will be in black and white.

Now the producers have gone one step further with the release of the film’s character posters. The eight posters of the leads are completely monochrome apart from the film’s logo and a small sliver that cuts down the centre of the poster, taking in an eye of each character completely drawing in the viewer.

Each poster also has a character describing statement.

The Giver tells the story of Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. It is only once he is given his life assignment, the position of Receiver of Memory that he begins to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.

Phillip Noyce directs an all-star cast that also includes Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Taylor Swift, Katie Holmes, Cameron Monaghan, and Alexander Skarsgard.

The Giver opens in cinemas August 15. Check out the gallery of character posters below.
