Angelina Jolie has been talking about her role in the upcoming Disney live action film Maleficent. Jolie, who plays the title role, told Digital Spy that Maleficent- the evil fairy who curses the baby Princess Aurora, has always been her favourite Disney character, and she was very excited to hear a movie depicting the story from her side was being made.

“I was really moved by the script,” the actress says in the behind the scenes footage. “It was like uncovering this great mystery. It’s one of those characters that for me you couldn’t half do it.”

Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley and Imelda Staunton star alongside Jolie in the film, and we can also see Joile’s children Vivienne, Pax and Zahara- with Vivienne playing a young Aurora.

Directed by Robert Stromberg, the film tells how Maleficent came to be so evil, and why she ended up cursing the baby. Stromberg describes Jolie as “perfect for the role,” and says it’s the most “perfect marriage of actor and role, in my opinion, for a long time.”

Elle Fanning, starring as Aurora, describes Maleficent as “elegant,” with an “intense beauty,” and Jolie adds that the character has “a wicked sense of fun.”

Okay, if you call cursing a newborn fun, we’ll go with it.

I echo the sentiments of Stromberg completely. I’ve never been a huge fan of Angelina Jolie’s work- in fact I’ve never really rated her as a very good actress at all. But this…this just seems to be her dream role, and in what little I’ve seen of the film, it shows. Jolie is hauntingly beautiful, menacingly intense and darkly wicked. I’m happy to see Disney taking on this character, who is often underrated in my opinion, and giving real credence to her tale, and I think Jolie has been a superb casting choice.

Check out the new behind-the-scenes video below.

Maleficent opens in the UK on May 28 and the US on May 30.
