The Dowager Approves: First Look: Pictures From Downton Abbey Season 5 Set

While a number of our favourite US shows are galloping towards their season finales and a glorious summer hiatus, across the pond the actors are hard at work filming for the upcoming autumn season premieres. One show that we’ve heard various murmurings about its fifth season, since filming started back in February but no images as of yet is ITV’s period drama Downton Abbey.

The hit series that follows the lives of both the upstairs and downstairs inhabitants of the Grantham’s ancestral home has so far taken us from season one’s time of the Titanic’s sinking in 1912 through to last season’s early 20s. While it is so far unclear when exactly the action from season 5 will take place, series creator Julian Fellowes has revealed previously that, at least for the foreseeable future, Downton will be set in the 1920s. Following the release of the first on set pictures from season 5 yesterday (April 24), it certainly confirms that statement.

Stars Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham), Allen Leech (Tom Branson) and Rob James-Collier (Thomas Barrow) were all pictured on set for the fifth series outside a churchyard in Oxford. Dockery, Bonneville and Leech were spotted filming together, dressed for the elements as seen below, along with Lord Grantham’s trusty companion, Isis, the Labrador Retriever.

All three are looking very determined and a formidable force with Tom clutching a scroll of parchment… battle plans for the latest obstacle thrown in their path? I certainly wouldn’t want to go up against these three.

However, the tense atmosphere of the scene didn’t spill over to the set once “cut” was called as seen from the below photo of Leech snapping a shot of the paparazzi taking shots of them all much to the amusement of Dockery.

Though James-Collier was not seen filming with the other three, he was photographed in costume on set, sporting a similar look to Bonneville and Leech.

Joining the cast this season are Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor, and Rade Sherbedgia with Dame Harriet Walter (Lady Shackleton) and Peter Egan (Lord Flintshire) returning.

Downton Abbey returns to ITV in October.
