Before reading this story, you should note that there will be some major spoilers regarding the new Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie and the TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D so you have been warned! SPOILER ALERT!
We love a good twist in movie franchises, but how do we feel about this major revelation in the brand new Captain America film which was released this weekend? Fans of Marvel’s new film and hit TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D were left shocked and confused when a huge plot twist occurred in The Winter Soldier.
The movie unveils that the S.H.I.E.L.D organisation has been secretly corrupted by Hydra since the very beginning. By the end of the film, the Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division has split leaving the crime-smashing group to move ahead without a helicarrier!
Christopher Markus, the co-writer for the new Captain America film, spoke to TVLine about Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s decision on the issue.
“Kevin, after a certain point, wanted to bring S.H.I.E.L.D. down, for Avengers purposes… We all had our theories about what might happen, because we knew there was a huge tie-in [between the movie and the TV series]. But none of us saw this coming!”
Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May from the TV show) revealed how the S.H.I.E.L.D cast felt as a whole when first learning about the twist. “We just kind of said, ‘Um… so what happens to our show?’”
The cast may have been caught off-guard by the surprise but the creators of the show were luckily informed well in advance. Producer Jed Whedon had this to say:
“We know a lot about every movie a long time before it comes out… We get to read the scripts and see early cuts, so if and when there are things that affect our world… we have a lot of time to prepare. And there are some things in [Captain America: The Winter Soldier] that will ripple into our show.”
Maurissa Tancharoen added that, “Everything’s an opportunity; everything is interconnected, which is definitely a unique situation when you have a television show connected to films like this.”
Unfortunately, the executive producers of the show were understandably not willing to spill the beans on what exactly is to come for the TV show but they did say that “things go crazy”.
Fans of the show and the movie may go crazy too but what was your reaction to the clever placement of plot twisting? Let us know in the comments below!
