19 years ago, Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis starred in one of the weirdest yet most wonderful films I have ever seen, 12 Monkeys.
Today, Syfy have revealed that they will be reigniting that weird and wonderfulness and are using the film as a basis for a new drama series.
Set to premiere in January 2015, “12 Monkeys [the series] is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock,” Syfy President David Howe said in a statement. “We are thrilled to add it to our slate of engaging and thought-provoking new scripted projects.”
Starring Aaron Stanford (Nikita) and Amanda Schull (Suits) the series has been given a 13 episode order, including the pilot which has already been filmed. Atlas Entertainment are on board to executive produce, and are also the studio behind the original film.
Nikita writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett penned the pilot and Jeffrey Renier, of Friday Night Lights fame, served as director.
Do I think this is a good idea? I’d like to say yes, however at this stage, I’m just not sure. One thing I do know for certain is that I will be watching 12 Monkeys the film again very soon, and I will be tuning in to the new series come January. I’ll leave all opinions until after the pilot, and cross my fingers in the mean time that they don’t destroy a classic.
