A day is just a day until it turns dark and the librarians come out to play.
Welcome to my visit to Night Vale.
I was lucky enough to attend the show at MotorCo in Durham this month and that was the best $26.62 I’ve ever spent. It will be difficult to tell you about it without actually telling you about it, because the show is still going on and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone! But let me take a stab at it anyway…
We (my friend Morgan and I) got there at 5pm even though the doors didn’t open until 6:30 and the show didn’t start until 7:30, but we knew better than to wait until show time. It was cold outside, but waiting in line is always fun when you can fangirl/boy with the folks around you….and that’s exactly what we did. There were several cosplayers milling about that we took pictures of, and we talked Night Vale with the people around us until it was time to go inside.
Our early line-forming paid off and Morgan and I were in the first two seats on the right side of the front row. Score! Cecil’s microphone was right in front of us and we were ready for the show!
The Librarians show was amazing with some awesome musical guests and a surprise appearance from John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats. There was no Carlos in person, but we did get a segment where Cecil talked to Carlos over the phone which was absolutely adorable. They may or may not have said “I love you” to each other. They totally did. There was also a really amazing part of audience interaction that the front row got to participate in, with my friend Morgan getting a super special part where she had to howl. If only we had been able to video tape!
I love listening to WTNV and I wait, rather impatiently I might add, for the 1st and the 15th of each month to come so I can have a new episode. But getting to SEE Cecil in person and watch his body language and hand gestures and facial expressions while he’s doing the podcast was more of a thrill than there are words to describe such a thing. If you are a Night Vale lover, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t go to a live show. Trust me on this.
If you have yet to explore the world of Night Vale, you can check out the website here. The podcasts are free and available for download on iTunes.
