There’s a new Hercules in town, and this time the mega muscled demi-god is played by none other than everyone’s favorite former WWE star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
The trailer, which shows footage of Johnson as Hercules during what appears to be some of the twelve labors, ends with a mighty cry from the demi-god proclaiming, “I AM HERCULES!”.
The film is directed by Brett Ratner and also stars Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes and John Hurt. The story line for this particular version of Hercules was adapted from the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The official plot synopsis is:
Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend…Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.
As much as I love The Rock, I’m a little skeptical about him portraying Hercules. But skepticism aside, I’ll tune in anyway. I’m always a sucker for Greek mythology.
Hercules arrives in theaters July 25th and in UK cinemas on August 8.
