Once Upon a Time has cast actress Sunny Mabrey (xXx: State of the Union, Snakes on a Plane) in the role of Glinda the Good Witch. This news, along with the fact that the next villain to trouble our protagonists will be none other than the Wicked Witch of the West (played by Rebecca Mader) makes it seem as though the second half of the ABC drama’s third season will be centered around Oz. I’m looking forward to exploring a new realm and watching Once do what it does best – putting a unique spin on established characters.
I don’t envy Rebecca Mader’s position, playing a new villain after Robbie Kay’s Peter Pan was so well-received, but I’m also thrilled at the idea of introducing Oz to the show’s mythology and branching out into new story lines after the epic Neverland arc concluded (mostly) last year. There are still a few dangling plot threads (Is Rumplestiltskin really dead? Why did Hook come back for Emma? How did Hook come back for Emma? Will Emma and Henry have their memories restored?) and the show could shoot off in a million different directions from these points. Of course, there’s also the question of how Glinda will fit into all this…
In short, there are a lot of questions and very few answers. But that is as it should be during a hiatus! Here’s hoping for lots of answers when this dreadful three-month hiatus finally ends on March 9th… And that both witches will be memorably magical.
Once Upon a Time returns Sunday, March 9th on ABC.
