Hold on to your hammer Marvel fans! The Avengers franchise could be expanding to include a Black Widow film!

With Scarlett Johansson’s cat-suit-wearing character already confirmed to feature heavily in upcoming cinematic ventures Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (which began production today! eeeeeek!), it was only a matter of time before she became Marvel’s first female film lead. This idea is currently being discussed, with president Kevin Feige telling Total Film, “We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film… The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that”

In addition to this, Joss Whedon has spoken about his love for the Russian spy, explaining, “She was the most fun for me because she’s not a hero, you know? And it’s something that I read – and I feel bad that I can’t remember who wrote the book – but it’s in one of the books explaining, ‘These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It’s a different thing – it’s a different skill set – and you don’t have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff’” For me, this is the exact reason Natasha Romanoff is one of my favourite Avengers characters, and I’m really excited to learn more about her past in the next few years.

Rumours of a possible Black Widow film have been swirling since 2010, when Johansson first appeared in Iron Man 2, and teased, “I think if the fans want it, and the audience wants it, nothing’s impossible”. Well I certainly want it! At the time ideas concerning possible Hawkeye and S.H.I.E.L.D spin-offs were also being discussed, and although Jeremy Renner is yet to grace the silver screen in a solo Marvel project, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D has had a killer first season so far on ABC.

So things are finally looking promising for Agent Romanoff, who you can next see in Captain America: The Winter Soldier this spring!
