Over the past few years, The Vampire Diaries has set the standards pretty high, especially with the recent 100th episode. These past few months, however, I have been increasingly impressed with spin-off The Originals, and found myself looking forward to it more!

Here are a few reasons why for those curious enough to question.

 1) Hot Men

The men are gorgeous! Sure this may be a slightly superficial reason, but why else would I have suffered through What Would Ryan Lochte Do? on E!? Firstly Klaus, whenever he smirks, speaks, breathes, I melt! I’m British and I still find his accent ridiculously attractive. He’s cheeky and mischievous. Despite all the horrible things he’s done I still love him and his sociopathic ways. Then there’s Elijah, the complete opposite of his brother, strong and protective and passionate. He looks so good in a suit and his jaw line is just wow! Then of course, Marcel, his smile is beautiful. And did you see that episode when he was shirtless? Need I say more.

2) Strong Female Characters

The women aren’t just gorgeous, but they’re strong. They stand for everything my inner feminist adores! ‘The Casket Girls’ was a whole episode about this, with Cami symbolically being freed from Klaus and Marcel’s mind compulsion. Davina was quite literally the most powerful character in the show! Throughout her pregnancy Hayley has been determined to look after herself because that’s how she’s lived her life. And Rebekah, despite everything she’s been through at the hands of her brother, and the loved ones she has lost, the heartbreak she has felt, she remains strong and she keeps going.

“It is said that this is a man’s world, and sometimes, it is. For every casket girl that was saved, countless others were not. But women are more resilient than given credit for. And some women, well, let’s just say their oppressors had better watch out. I, too, am resilient, and I’m tired of being oppressed.”

3) The Writing

The writing on this show has been absolutely brilliant. Somehow each episode has the perfect mix of cute, adorable moments that will make you ‘awww’ out loud, and badass action scenes that have you on the edge of your seat! Every episode is a rollercoaster that has me laughing out loud, and sobbing my heart out two minutes later.

4) Excellent Character Development

One of the bonuses of The Originals stemming from an established fan-favourite like The Vampire Diaries, who, for awhile, had a MASSIVE cast of characters, is the huge potential for focused character development, and boy have they taken that opportunity by the horns! As a Psychology major I love learning about people’s back-stories, and Klaus has been particularly fascinating to me, as I don’t believe anyone is born evil. His past and current relationships with Marcel have shown Klaus’ ultimate humanity, and the affect issues with his father have had on him.

5) The Power of Family

For the Mikaelsons, family is power. The concept of family is behind every episode of the show. There have been struggles and arguments between Rebekah and Klaus, but also good times, such as the love shared by Rebekah and Elijah, Klaus coming round to the idea of being a father, and Hayley being welcomed into the family, as well as her quest to find her own ancestors. A familial relationship was established between Marcel and Davina, and everything Sophie Devereaux has done has been in the hope of bringing her niece back to life. Family has always been personally important in my life, and to see it be so prominent in the show is heartwarming.

6) A Gorgeous Setting

It’s no wonder Klaus wants to reclaim his power over New Orleans, the setting of this show is unbelievable. New Orleans: the birthplace of Mardi Gras, opera, theatre, jazz, and poker – arguably one of the culture capitals of the world! No place is as perfect for the show to be set in as New Orleans.

7) Taking A Dive Into History

Following on from the setting of New Orleans, the history this show represents makes it so interesting. The Original vampires have been around since the 10th century. The flashbacks are fantastic, especially the décor and the costumes! Everyone loves a good period drama these days, just look at Downton Abbey, and The Originals offers a well-judged element of this.

8) The More Mystical Elements Of The Show

In addition to this, the supernatural aspect of The Originals has not only allowed for some insane demonstrations of power, but also leaves the show open to unexpected twists and turns, new discoveries, ancient prophecies, and (in true Sherlock fashion) that unconscious thought that everyone you think is dead probably isn’t!

Finally the cliffhangers! My god the cliffhangers! They leave you wishing for a time machine to take you to next Tuesday!

The show has quickly become the highlight of my week, and you can check out The Originals for yourself Tuesdays on the CW.
