Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz have signed up to play the leads in The Lobster, which will be Oscar-nominated Yorgos Lanthimos’ first English-speaking feature film. The unconventional love story will be set in a dystopian future where finding a partner is a matter of life and death. Sheesh, if you thought finding love nowadays was hard enough be glad you’re not from this happy sounding place.
Farrell and Weisz will be joining an interesting cast which already includes Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, Olivia Colman, Ariane Labed and Aggeliki Papoulia. At one point, Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke had been attached to a lead role but had to leave over scheduling conflicts with Everest.
Lanthimos has nothing but excitement and gratitude when it comes to his cast, “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such great actors. Their contribution to our film will enrich and expand the world we are trying to create and explore. Furthermore our team of old and new collaborators makes me very confident and excited to start making this film.”
Co-written by Lanthimos and his long-time collaborator, Efthimis Filippou, it’s interesting to note that this particular dystopian film isn’t a film adaptation of a book series. While the dystopian genre isn’t new, both in terms of film and literature, there seems to be a recent wave of dystopian film adaptations from The Hunger Games trilogy to Divergent and The Maze Runner, all with installments set to be released later this year. Often, with adaptations, audiences find themselves comparing the film to its source material and so The Lobster should be refreshing in this regard. It won’t stop audiences from making comparisons with similar films, but the premise itself sounds promising.
At least we know the cast will be great. We’ll keep an eye out for further information regarding the film, especially with regard to plot and the details of its dystopian world. The film’s title should also become clearer as newer information is released.
