It has been announced that actor Ralph Waite, best known for his role as Pa Walton in the classic drama The Waltons has died at the age of 85.
Waite played the part of Daddy Walton for nearly a decade and was nominated for an Emmy for the role in 1978.
However, in recent years he was best known for playing Jackson Gibbs, the father of Mark Harmon’s Jethro Gibbs, in the CBS drama NCIS. The cast and crew released the following statement concerning Waite’s passing.
Everyone at NCIS is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Ralph Waite, Ralph was family to us, a tremendous talent and a very special man. We truly cherish the time we had with him. Our hearts and prayers go out to his loved ones.
Pauley Perrette, who plays Abbie sent her own personal message following the news of the death of “Papa Gibbs”.
So Sad. Ralph Waite has passed away. Papa Gibbs. We love him at NCIS SO much. So so sad.

Waites was also known as “Pops” to Seeley Booth in Bones where he played his grandfather since 2008. David Boreanaz who plays Booth in the Fox drama tweeted a message of condolence for the actor.

He also had roles in movies such as Cool Hand Luke, Five Easy Pieces and The Bodyguard. Waite also made an unsuccessful run for Congress in 1990.
For whatever role you best remember him, it is a sad loss for Hollywood.
