Actress Carey Mulligan is confirmed to make her debut in London’s West End this summer. The 28-year old Brit is to star as Kyra Hollis in the revival of David Hare’s Olivier Award-winning play Skylight.
Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG nominee, and BAFTA winner Mulligan is best known for her memorable performances on the silver screen, for example in The Great Gatsby, Never Let Me Go and currently Inside Llewyn Davis. Whovians will also remember here as ally Sparrow in Doctor Who episode “Blink”, a role which led to many fans petitioning for her to become the new companion. This did not come to pass as Hollywood came calling.
She has, however also given fantastic performances on the stage, specifically in an off-West End and eventually Broadway production of The Seagull. Sir David Hare told British paper The Daily Mail that it was seeing Mulligan as Nina in this show that secured her part as Kyra, describing her as “incredible on stage”. In addition to this, she has also graced the Great White Way in Through A Glass Darkly in 2011. This official West End debut sees Mulligan return to her theatre roots in a show that Londoners will not want to miss!
The play, which first opened in 1995, takes place as two ex-lovers, Kyra and Tom Sergeant, reunite for one night after Tom is widowed. Love Actually‘s Bill Nighy is to reprise the character of Tom, a role he first played in 1997. Rounding out the cast of three is Matthew Beard, who played opposite Mulligan in An Education, making his stage debut as Tom’s son. Directed by Stephen Daldry, Skylight will begin its two-month run at the Wyndham’s Theatre on 18th June 2014.
